Resources to support your scholarly teaching in mathematics

This section offers starting points for instructors interested in scholarly teaching, using evidence to inform classroom practice, or exploring research in mathematics education. Resources focus on undergraduate mathematics instruction. 

Getting started with journal literature

Note: Full access varies by year. Use the journal’s landing page to select the appropriate database based on coverage dates.

  • Journal for research in mathematics education An official journal of the NCTM, this is a leading publication for peer-reviewed research in mathematics education across all levels, from preschool to post-secondary.
  • Research in Mathematics Education An international, peer-reviewed journal publishing original research on mathematics education across contexts and systems. Includes empirical studies, theoretical work, critical reviews, and reports relevant to both research and practice.

  • Mathematics Education Research Journal (MERJ) The official journal of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA), MERJ publishes peer-reviewed research on the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels. Articles include empirical studies, short reports, and book reviews.

  • REDIMAT: Journal of Research in Mathematics Education. An international open access journal publishing peer-reviewed empirical and theoretical research in mathematics education, with a focus on Spanish- and Latin American contexts. Publishes in English and Spanish. Articles reflect a range of theoretical and methodological approaches.

  • Statistics Education Research Journal (SERJ) SERJ is a peer-reviewed open access journal published by the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE). It features research on teaching, learning, and understanding statistics and probability at all educational levels, including higher education. Topics include cognitive, curricular, attitudinal, and technological aspects of statistics education. Articles are free to access and are published three times a year.

  • For the Learning of Mathematics (FLM). FLM is a peer-reviewed journal that promotes critical reflection, theoretical exploration, and research on mathematics education at all levels. It is intended for educators engaged in the complexities of teaching and learning mathematics. Articles are published in English or French, three times a year.
    Published in Canada under the auspices of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG).

Other resources

First-Year Math & Stats in Canada (FYMSiC). FYMSiC is a scholarly community focused on post-secondary mathematics and statistics education in Canada. The network shares teaching strategies, hosts regular online meetups, circulates a newsletter, and organizes an annual conference. Visit their website for community news, teaching resources, and ways to get involved.
