Why Consult Background Sources?

Scholarly, discipline specific reference sources (encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.) are an excellent way to begin your search for information about  your topic, the key concepts and facts you need and for locating other readings.

When using hard copy sources in the Reference Collection (behind the Service Desk in the Library), check to see if there is a subject index at the end of the source or at the end of the last volume of a multivolume source.
