Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is an emerging field of original research and scholarship with a focus on teaching and learning practice in the context of higher education. Research is interdisciplinary in nature and SoTL scholars generally come from a variety of backgrounds  and disciplines and employ a wide range of methods, but are united in their focus on understanding student learning, innovations in pedagogical practice and transformation of higher education.

For more information about SoTL and SoTL initiatives at MRU, please visit the Mokakiiks Centre for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning web page.

Getting Started

Dan Bernstein (University of Kansas), Mary Taylor Huber (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching), Pat Hutchings (Gonzaga University), Gary Poole (University of British Columbia), and Joanna Renc-Roe (Central European University, Budapest) discuss the history of the scholarship of teaching and learning. Presented by the Center for Engaged Learning at Elon University and the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL), this video was produced for ISSOTL Online 2013, an online conference held in conjunction with the ISSOTL 2013 conference in Raleigh, North Carolina.
