HPED 1010 students work with the Blaine Collection during an archives session, October 2019

A record-breaking number of classes came to the Archives and Special Collections in the 2019/20 academic year. We taught a total of 32 archives sessions for students from 7 disciplines. In archives sessions, students learn how to conduct archival research and analyze primary sources, often working directly with our collections. Some assignments students worked on in the Archives included:

  • A medieval manuscript scavenger hunt - English 3306
  • Creating advertisements based on ads they found in sports programs from the Blaine Collection - History 3357
  • Developing an educational activity based on archival sources to teach historical thinking concepts to primary students - Education 4107
  • Redesigning a space using architectural plans - Interior Design 3143
  • Critically examining representations of Indigenous peoples in Calgary Stampede programs from the 1950/60s from the Blaine Collection - Health and Physical Education 1010

Please contact Peter Houston if you are a faculty member interested in booking an archives session. Students seem to really enjoy hands-on work with archival sources, and we're always happy to have classes visit the Archives!
